Participants are met at the airport in Managua by PSE staff, who travel with the group to the hotel. At the hotel the group is treated to their first of many real Nicaraguan meals. The evening comes to a close with a special activity introducing all the delights of Nicaragua's culture and complicated history, before getting prepared for their next full day!
Participants begin the day with a hearty breakfast before taking a tour of some of the country's cultural sites. We start with an adrenaline rush, an optional zip-lining across a crater lake, before we go to the top of the active volcano Masaya. From there we go to the beautiful lookout Catarina, overlooking Apoyo Lagoon, have a traditional Nicaraguan snack and take a moment for some shopping. We continue the day with lunch in the beautiful colonial city of Granada, before a relaxing boat ride on Lake Nicaragua. We end the day with a small tour of Granada's central areas, before we head back to the hotel for dinner.
Our service days are when participants experience working side by side with community members . Work is divided over the days and combined with talks and testimonials from community members on social issues.Participants gain crucial skills in teamwork, critical thinking and the importance of project sustainability and working seamlessly with partner communities. The participants come together at the end of the day for a special activity and reflection seminars. It is through these seminars that participants can set themselves goals to improve their work daily and become more unified as a group, as well as reflect on their experience.
On the final day of the trip, we arrange a farewell celebration in the community. We bring food, eat together, hear some words from the community partners and spend some last enjoyable moments with the people we have worked alongside. It is a time to celebrate the project we have completed, but also a chance to spend some time with the community outside of work.
PSE coordinators take the participants to the airport and make sure everyone gets safely checked in and through immigration.
