Project Highlight: Five Year Economic Development Plan in Santa Julia

In 2012, PSE began an innovative project with Santa Julia's women's cooperative, Gloria Quintanilla. The collaboration was developed by numerous PSE groups, including an international business society, and has grown into a five-year economic development plan. As a result, the women have mechanized their coffee production process from seed to cup, cutting out the middle men and has enabled them to successfully commercialize their own coffee product for local customers. With the help of various groups, our PSE staff members have assisted the women's cooperative in achieving the goals of this plan via constant communication and support.

Partner Community Highlight: Santa Julia

The rural community of Santa Julia sits on a mountain ridge in the center-west of Nicaragua, outside the capital city of Managua. The community, composed of about sixty four families, was once home to a large industrial coffee plantation owned by the former dictator of Nicaragua, Anastasio Somoza. The community is organized by a women's cooperative, Cooperativa Gloria Quintanilla, whose members are instrumental in restoring local food production and developing the fair trade coffee production of Santa Julia.
